Biloxi, Mississippi 1990

August 19, 1990

Biloxi, Mississippi

Mississippi Coast Coliseum

Introduction

One of the better amateur filmed shows from the HITS tour.

Background

This show was the 67th of the 127-date Hot in the Shade tour. According to Kiss Alive Forever, Gene was sick and thus sang in an octave lower then normal.

Gene was wearing all black leather except for white wrestling boots. Bruce was wearing a long sleeve gold shirt and black vest. Paul was wearing black leather pants and a vest.

Video Specifics

A single cam, handheld from the back center of the venue. Generally well shot with no heads in the way.

The Show

I Stole Your Love- a well-filmed intro (we get to see all the pyro). A solid opener.

Deuce- Gene’s vocals are rough sounding. There is no scream by Gene at the end of the song. Eric is wearing reflective sunglasses for some reason.

Heaven’s on Fire- a better version then most. The song begins with flamethrowers, which is well filmed as well.

Crazy Nights- Paul begins with a rant about newspaper writer telling him it’s time to quit. “ we have 7,500 wild fuckin’ maniacs tonight. ’’. According to the book, Kiss Alive Forever, the attendance was 5,711. A rather middle of the road version.

Black Diamond- a decent version although most of the screen time is devoted to Paul dancing on the side railing.

Shout It Out Loud- Gene’s vocals are a train wreck.

Strutter- a surprisingly decent and energetic version.

Callin’ Dr. Love- another Gene vocal cringe fest. Early on in the song, while on one of the side railings, Gene shakes his head and looks back to the band (perhaps looking for more back-up support or realizing how bad his voice is). Toward the end of the song, a beach ball gets thrown near Gene but misses.

I Was Made For Lovin’ You- an enjoyably version with good lighting. Paul’s vocals aren’t screechy at all.

Rise to It- “ Mississippi Delta blues, blues started right here, without the blues there would be no rock ’’. A decent version with an energetic Paul getting most of the screen time.

Fits Like A Glove- at this point in the show, Gene is practically speaking the words to this song instead of singing them. During the breakdown part, while on one of the railings, Gene says “ fits kinda good down there, don’t it ? ’’.

Hide Your Heart- the audience participation part gets the song going. A pedestrian version with the filmer zoomed out for most of the song.

Lick It Up- a rant by Paul about not paying any attention to teachers or bosses. Paul addressing the female fan in the crowd “ if I have this face then you have a place to sit ’’.

God of Thunder- considering the song, Gene’s dreadful vocals aren’t as out of place as on other songs. Carr’s drum solo follows with lots of pyro (and Leon talking) to end the song.

Forever- Paul rants about the fans having the power to request whatever songs they want to hear and mentions that he heard this song while “ in the Kiss bus in the Jacuzzi ’’.

Cold Gin- Gene does a leg kick at the beginning. Gene and Paul sing lead during the first verse. Paul sings the second verse. Gene does another leg kick, this time right after Paul, which brings a smile to Paul’s face. Toward the end of the song, Gene goes down on 1 knee and says something to security in front of the stage.

Tears Are Falling- Paul’s vocals aren’t great but the backing vocals are pretty good.

I Love It Loud- Gene is not at the microphone at the beginning of the song and thus not chanting the opening part of the song. As the song is about to begin, no one sings at all. Gene and Paul look at each other. The song is halted then re-started with Gene singing. A dreadful version.

Love Gun- a rather standard version.

Detroit Rock City- a slightly better then average version. All three members share one of the side railings during Bruce’s solo. Pyro ends the song.

I Want You- the mirror ball drops during the intro while Eric can be seen sitting on the drum riser. The logo pops up from behind Carr as the song begins. Gene and Paul horse around during Bruce’s solo, all three-share center stage. Paul does his vocal flexing, which you might want to skip.

Rock and Roll All Nite- Gene sings the first verse and one can’t help but grimace at how bad his voice sounds. Carr sings the second verse with Paul lending ample support. The song and show end with pyro.

Overall

One of the better-filmed shows from this tour. Gene’s vocals are dreadful but that kind of added to the show. If you were to pick a handful of shows from the HITS tour, this would certainly be one of them. Overall, an 8.5 out of 10.
