Cleveland, Ohio 1976
September 3, 1976
Cleveland, Ohio
Richfield
Coliseum
One of the
earliest real soundboard recordings of the band. A good show but the mix could
have been better.
Background
The 30th
show of the 35-date Destroyer tour.
Audio
Specifics
A
soundboard recording. The drums and vocals are very prominent in the mix
while the guitars are rather weak. Overall, a 9 out of 10 (it would be higher
had the mix been better).
The Show
King of
the Night Time World- the guitar intro by Ace can barely be heard. This song
is a fine example of how good Peter was.
Let Me
Go Rock and Roll- “ it might be getting cool outside but we gotta hot bunch
tonight ’’. A nice little version although the thin guitars don’t help matters
any. I like some of the extended versions from later tours better.
Strutter-
some nice bass work by Gene on this one. Most versions of this song on this
tour have prominent bass work (Jersey City, Toronto).
Hotter
Then Hell- “ we’re gonna get this place…’’. You can fill in the rest. This
early makeup standard gets a faithful playing.
Nothin’
to Lose- Gene’s vocals are a tad more objectionable then the Alive
version. Peter adds a “ shake it for Petey ’’ near the end of the song. Peter’s
vocals are good as well.
Cold
Gin- Paul begins this with a dated rap about “ getting high ’’ and of
course, alcohol. There is no toggle beginning by Ace, they just plow right into
the song. Some nice enunciation by Gene (especially the “ build my fire part’’)
early on in the song is nice to hear although the song itself is rather average.
Ace’s solo ends the song.
Shout It
Out Loud- a typical version but the vocals are slightly better then normal.
Do You
Love Me?- good drumming by Peter especially compared to the Farewell tour
versions. However, Paul’s vocals don’t do anything to impress. The ending is not
great either with Paul yelling unlike the Reunion tour version.
God of
Thunder- Gene’s vocals have an echo sort of effect throughout the song for
some reason. Peter’s drum solo is in the middle of the song. After Peter’s solo,
Gene seems to be screaming the words to the song.
Rock and
Roll All Nite- a standard version but the song cuts before Ace’s solo. I’m
not sure if this is just my copy or this is on every copy of this show.
Deuce-
an odd place for this usual show opener. A decent version although Gene’s
vocals are slightly croaky.
Firehouse- “ we’re gonna have to call out ’’. I’m sure you know the rest.
More prominent guitars would have helped this version.
Black
Diamond- Paul’s extended guitar intro starts the song. A very solid version
with Peter’s vocals being nice and clear.
Certainly worth tracking down since so few top quality shows exist from this tour and from the ‘70s shows in general. My only complaint is the mediocre mix, which detracted from my enjoyment of the show. Overall, an 8.5 out of 10.
