Gothenburg, Sweden 1999

Gothenburg, Sweden

Scandinavium

Introduction

An interesting but unfortunately not the best quality show from this tour.

Background

The sixth show of the twenty-two date Psycho Circus European tour and the second of two nights in Gothenburg. Both Gothenburg are available on video.

Video Specifics

An amateur, multi-cam shot show. There are about 4 camera angles that are used for this show. The center camera and the one on Gene’s side are the best of the bunch. The camera is on the floor is not good at all since the viewer ends up seeing mostly the back of crowd members heads. Considering this show was filmed with multiple cameras, I was disappointed in the overall look of the concert. I’ve seen a couple of single cam shows on this tour that are better shot then this multi-cam show.

The Show

Psycho Circus- surprisingly decent vocals by Paul are marred by shaky camerawork.

Shout It Out Loud- a satisfactory version is still hampered by mediocre camerawork. Prior to the next song, Paul says to the Gothenburg crowd, referring to the band playing two nights, “ you’ll be either number one or number two. Do you want to be number one ? ’’

Deuce- Paul seems to play most of the song with his guitar between his legs, as he seemed to do for most of the first few songs of the show. The camera switches during the choreography made me dizzy.

Do You Love Me ?- the audience sings the first verse and the chorus. Paul’s vocals are nothing too special.

Firehouse- the audio was lacking in spots and camera switches were too numerous. Gene blows 1 fireball at the end. Paul can be seen in the background (while Gene is doing his fire routine) taking a drink.

Shock Me- Paul and Ace get almost all the screen time during this time and Paul spends it rubbing his chest, much to the delight of the female fans in attendance.

Let Me Go Rock and Roll- another well played version of this makeup classic. The audio wasn’t too great and seemed to vary depending on which camera was being used.

Callin’ Dr. Love- Gene vocals sound like he is singing in a cave. During most songs sung by Gene during this show, he says “ let me see your hands ’’ which gets a little annoying.

Into the Void- probably the best Psycho Circus era song live but that isn’t saying too much. Ace’s solo concludes the song.

Paul introduces the next song as such “ How many have an album called Destroyer ? The first song on the album, you’ve already heard, the second song starts like… ’’. Paul’s statement would make sense had they actually played Detroit Rock City. On a related note, they opened with Detroit Rock City on the previous night.

King of the Night Time World- we get to see the first close shots of Peter.

God of Thunder- Gene’s blood spitting is hardly menacing with the copious amounts simply poring out of his mouth. The camerawork is good and this song is one of the better ones of the show.

Within- Gene spends the first half of the song motioning “ up ’’ to the crew offstage. However, the vocals are dreadful and this song is a total right off. Why they kept this song in the setlist for so long on this tour is beyond me. Peter’s solo ends the song.

Prior to the next song, Gene goes into a boxing stance and begins shadow boxing (it seems to be directed in Ace’s direction). Paul says “ go Gene go ’’.

Cold Gin- decent camerawork and solid by playing make this a better then average version. Ace does a leg kick near the end of the song.

Love Gun- Paul says a few words in Swedish then the noise meter follows. As Paul lands on his platform he says “ I’m coming down ’’ then slaps hands with the crowd once he does land on the platform.

100,000 Years- the vocals sound a little distant. Just before the audience participation part “do you feel alright ’’, Gene and Ace do a little square-dancing routine. J

I Was Made For Lovin’ You- as Paul is doing the introduction to this song, Gene spits water on Paul, to the delight of the fans who seem to approve. After they screw up the beginning of the song, the rest of the song is played smoothly although the vocals seem a bit soft. Paul seems to have a smirk on his face for most of the song. Toward the end of the song, Paul runs over with a mouthful of water and spits it at Gene. The floor camera was used for this last water spitting.

Rock and Roll All Nite- Gene spends most of the time glancing at Paul throughout the song. During the first part of the song, as Paul got close to Gene, Gene would kick to keep Paul away. It would seem that Gene was more upset with the water spitting then Paul.

Beth- not too much to say about this.

Detroit Rock City- a tad bass heavy but good.

Black Diamond- the sound isn’t crisp by any means but the camerawork is good at the end.

Overall

An interesting show but not the greatest quality show available from this tour. The first night show from Gothenburg is more viewer-friendly but doesn’t contain as many unusual goings on. Overall, a 7.5 out of 10.
