Irvine Meadows, California 1983

Irvine Meadows, California

Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre

Introduction

Regarded by most as one of best quality audios from the Creatures tour. That being said, the band sounds rather plodding in this particular performance.

Background

The 48th date of the 52-date North American date Creatures of the Night tour. This was the first show (of five) on the tour in which Motley Crue opened for Kiss. The announcer says “ alright Los Angeles…’’ so if you were saying to yourself “ where is Irvine Meadows ? ’’. Now you know.

This show has been available for quite some time. Originally (I think), this show was from the 3-LP vinyl Japanese bootleg called 10th Anniversary Tour. Good luck finding this and when you do be prepared to pay over $100 for it.

Audio Specifics

Certainly one of the better sounding recordings from this tour. The vocals sound washed out but the drums are strong. There is a slight fad between songs, which indicates its vinyl source. The audio quality is probably in the neighbourhood of an 8 out of 10.

The Show

Creatures of the Night- a standard performance. Surprisingly, Vinnie’s solo does not sound out of place but the night is still young.

Detroit Rock City- instrumentally this song is fine but I can’t help but think that better vocals would of helped.

Cold Gin- begins with the usual intro by Paul along with encouraging the audience to

“ do whatever the fuck you want ’’. Not the greatest version, Gene repeats the line “ The landlord's gone, I'm down and out ’’ about three times.

Callin’ Dr. Love- “ this is a song from the horniest doctor who ever lived ’’. A rather pedestrian version although Vinnie’s solo during the song is good.

Firehouse- a solid effort by all played at a nice tempo.

I Want You- Paul guitar solo begins the song. Overall, not a bad version. Thankfully, Paul’s vocal flexing is kept to a minimum. Vinnie’s guitar solo is worth a listen only if you have a high tolerance for shredding guitar work.

I Love It Loud- Paul introduces this song “ Here’s a song that says it real simple. If its too loud, your too fuckin’ old ’’. The crowd seems into this song but Gene’s bass is way too high in the mix, which ruins it.

War Machine- Gene’s vocals could have been more prominent but Carr drumming is sledgehammer like. His drum solo follows and is most definitely worth a listen.

Love Gun- Paul introduces this song talking about a day off in Mexico, donkey shows, and airport security. A decent version with some good bass work by Gene.

God of Thunder- Gene’s bass solo begins this off as usual. Unfortunately his vocals are difficult to hear.

I Still Love You- a standard effort that is probably better then one would expect.

Black Diamond- after Paul’s guitar intro, he says “ this ones for all the girls ’’. Carr’s vocals are difficult to hear but the guitar playing is good. The song ends with pyro.

Strutter- there is no intro by Paul, the song begins abruptly right after Black Diamond ends. “ Some people are so damn lame. Why don’t you tell them to fuck off ? All we really want to do is…

Rock and Roll All Nite- Gene vocals are far from impressive. The song has the typical audience participation section and ends with pyro.

Overall

A decent show that is worth adding to the collection but one that I rarely listen to on any kind of regular basis. Overall, a 7.5 out of 10.
