Phoenix AZ
A good
entertaining show as most of the Konvention shows were but this version is the
edited short version (only 90 minutes). The full performance was 120 minutes in
length.
Background
The sixth
date of the twenty one-date North American Konvention tour.
Video
Specifics
This is a
2-cam tripod shot show. The tripods are on the Gene side of the stage and in the
center. Overall, generally well filmed.
One of the
best lit Konvention shows. Most of them are a tad on the dark side but this one
is bright.
“ Clothing
Specifics ’’. Gene is wearing a light blue jean top with black leather pants.
Paul is wearing a sparsely sequined black vest with multi-coloured pants that
look like belong as part of the Asylum tour wardrobe. Bruce is wearing is
wearing black long sleeve top with a wing design on the front.
The Show
Mr.
Speed- Paul and the audience trade vocals throughout the song. Paul says “
that’s one we didn’t practice ’’.
Comin’
Home- a well played Unplugged standard.
Larger
Then Life- the first verse is attempted but the song doesn’t get past that
point before it is abandoned.
Sure Know Something- the crowd sings the verses with the band singing the chorus. During the breakdown section (“ ahhh…ahhh…ahhh ’’) a crowd member yells
“ Bruce !
’’ which brings a smile to Gene’s face.
World
Without Heroes- a well-played version. Gene smirks a few times and looks
like he might lose it but doesn’t. Unfortunately, the camera work isn’t too hot.
C’mon
and Love Me- one of the better songs of the show played with a quicker tempo
then some of the plodding live versions.
Christine Sixteen- again, the crowd sings the verses while the band sings
the chorus, except for the last verse. A head gets in the way of the Gene side
camera and it switches to the center camera for most of the song.
Parasite- the band plays up to the first verse then the song is abandoned.
They play the song like a country song. A lot different then almost every
version you’ve heard before. At the end of the attempt, Gene says “ we’ll do
everything ever written, don’t worry. ’’.
Hard
Luck Woman- early in the song, two girls get up and leave (perhaps to go to
the washroom ?). These two girls get Gene’s attention. Vocally, Paul’s tone
sounds a little different for some reason then some of the other versions on
this tour.
Nothin’
to Lose- good vocals by Eric. The same two girls return that got up during
the previous song.
God of
Thunder- the typical Unplugged countrified version with Paul adding the
distorted “ lord of the wasteland ’’ bit.
Goodbye- a crowd member asks/yells for War Machine, Paul introduces this song as,
“ left over
from my solo album…War Machine (jokingly) ’’. A good version and a perfect
example of the Unplugged tour, which I think was to give some hidden gems a
chance to shine.
See You
Tonite- in my opinion, this was almost always Gene’s best song of every
Konvention performance and this is no different. I’m not sure how many
Konvention shows were played with both solo album tune being played.
Love
Theme From Kiss- the intro part is very briefly played before it is
abandoned. Gene justifies this by saying “ that is such an obscure song, nobody
knows it ’’.
Callin’
Dr. Love- like numerous songs, the crowd sings the verse while the band
sings the chorus.
Black
Diamond- decent and clear vocals by Eric. At the end of the song, Gene gets
up and mocks the coda ending, which is amusing to see.
I Want
You- Paul seems to forget the words half way through the song. He puts up
his hand to presumably halt the song but the crowd keeps singing, which prevents
him from doing so. The song ends with his vocal flexing, which seems out of
place in the acoustic setting
All the
Way- the crowd tries to sing this but most don’t know the words. Paul at
least attempts the chorus. Gene makes a token effort.
King of
the Night Time World- Paul sings three quarters of the song with an audience
member singing the last part of the song.
Heaven’s
on Fire- an audience member does a surprisingly good job of singing this one
all the way through.
God Gave Rock and Roll To You II- the audience sings Gene vocal parts while Paul sings his own. This seems better then most Revenge tour versions.
An entertaining enough performance albeit abbreviated. For the most part, you can’t go wrong with getting almost any of the Konvention shows. I’ll look for the complete show and you should probably as well. Overall, let’s say 7.5 out of 10.
