Introduction

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Crazy Nights tour but this is a rather enjoyable show with more hits then misses during the course of the performance.

Background

This was the 14th of the 97-date North American Crazy Night tour. On the Asylum tour at this same venue, Paul was hit by a bottle.

Audio Specifics

The audio quality is above average (8-8.5 out of 10). All instruments can be heard and the vocals are clean throughout.

The Show

Love Gun- a standard version, nothing more, nothing less.

Cold Gin- a rollicking version and a song that rarely sounds bad when played live.

Bang, Bang, You- not a bad song in a live setting but not fabulous either. The self referencing lyric “ I'll shoot you down with my love gun, baby ’’ is cheesy to say the least. The ending is annoying as well with numerous “ bang, bang ’’ chants from Paul.

Fits Like A Glove- “ when it fits tight, you know how good it feels…Nothing fits better then a big All-American Man. ’’ There is that self reference again. An enjoyable little version with good vocals by Gene. During the breakdown section, Gene says “ who has the biggest tits ? ’’. Gene always had a way with words.

Crazy Nights- like nearly every Crazy Nights song, this one sounded better on the album then played live and this one is no different.

No, No, No- arguably one of the worst live songs ever by the band (next to Within). This version does nothing to impress

Reason to Live- Paul introduces the song by saying the new video premiers on MTV this Friday. A decent version although Paul’s vocals sound distant.

War Machine- a faithful playing with clean, clear vocals by Gene.

Heaven’s on Fire- with jeans presumably being thrown on stage, Paul says “ I can smell Judy in the front ’’. The clothing brigade continues with a bra getting thrown on stage and Paul responding “ if you come back stage, I’ll fit it on ya personally ’’. Paul leads the crowd in girls versus guys type of contest to see who can make the most noise.

A likeable version but Paul vocals could be a little stronger but not a major problem all things considered.

Gene bass solo (which is better then the usual token efforts he puts forth) helps the start of…

I Love It Loud- one of the better Carr era versions. I listened to the bass solo and this song a few times.

Lick It Up- Paul comments on a female in the crowd “ this should be re-named the dairy state because this girls about to drop some milk ’’. A long-winded intro by Paul about a gym, a girl, and a locker room, which leads into the song. This version is slightly above the ponderous category but not by much.

Rock and Roll All Nite- Paul begins this song with a 100,00 Years kind of rap by saying “ stand up for what you believe in ’’. During the first chorus, Paul can be heard saying

“ holy shit ’’. Perhaps something was thrown at him from the audience. The song ends with audience participation.

Whole Lotta Love- “ what’s a concert without a roll of toilet paper ?…Wanna hear a Led Zeppelin tune ? ’’. A better version then one might expect, which segues into…

Tears Are Falling- one of the better versions of this Asylum song, which segues into…

Detroit Rock City- I can help but think that the band was on some sort of curfew since the previous two songs segued into the next song. Too bad the show ends with a pedestrian version of this song, complete with pyro.

Overall

A surprisingly decent performance from a tour that didn’t have too many. I like this show better then some shows from better tours. Overall, a 8.5 out of 10.
